Getting some pussy

Thinking of getting a cat, two years after our beloved WHOdog, Ninja passed away.

Am considering either a Maine Coon or Bengal and wondered if any WHOers had experience of these?

I have two daughters at home who are 6 and 13, plus there is pretty much always somebody at home (not me as I'm out grafting).

Beat Freak - I agree nothing wrong with a domestic moggy. I have a female cat who in the summer pretty much lives outside and just comes in to feed. Hates being picked up and will hiss and spit if you try. My male cat who sadly is 17 now is the friendliest cat you could ever meet, often goes to sleep on my chest at night.

Truth is, the whole 'dogs have owners, cats have staff' thing is absolute bollocks. If your cat doesn't give a shit about you and treats you like staff, its almost certainly because you're a massive cunt who shouldn't be trusted with a goldfish.

Go to your local rescue centre and get yourself a moggy. I prefer females, in my experience I find males more nomadic and usually get themselves into more trouble, i.e run over, injured in fights etc where as females tend to stick to their own turf. However, I do find males more affectionate and females a bit more aloof.

Northern sold,having to put a dog to sleep is horrible,we had a twelve year old GSP put to rest a couple of years ago,the whole family were distraught including me.
Once a pet is struggling and there’s no other solution it’s the only way,
I don’t think they know what’s going on but once they get injected and you see the life go and they drop slowly it’s absolutely fucking gutting.
My three kids (two of them grown upish) went to vets and said they’re fairwells, a tough morning for me,don’t know how I kept myself together but sometimes you find a way.

Buster was our first family dog,sounds rediculous but have a mini shrine in the house to remember him(nothing too overboard just he’s collar,name tag and two photos) part of the family he was .
Couldn’t in a million years feel the same way about a cat.

I have two German Shorthaired Pointers who would happily sniff out and eat a fucking cat for breakfast and have fun doing so.
Our dogs are shorthaired (hence their name) and don’t stink,both kip in the “boot room”.

If you’re in need of a proper pet,freind,kids best mate and guard dog,prepared to run them twice a day look no further.
However if you’re a bit of a bender and under the thumb get a fucking cat.

Northern That sounds awful and something I'll have to contend with one day...got a black lab, my first dog.

I had to put 2 20 year old cat brothers to sleep a couple of years ago, wife held one and later when the other was ready I held him.

It felt like an execution, which it was in a way. I'm too proud to say I blubbed like a little girl. I'm still not over it.

One thing to bear in mind if you get an Bengal is that they have a massive prey drive and will end up killing loads of birds/mice and rabbits. Often being brought back alive and into the house so you have to be careful.

Amen to that Gary.... that and having to roll our Black Labs body into a body bag after and carry him out to the vets van after will haunt me until my dying days... hence we have ferrets now... if they go it's into the Soldo' back garden funeral parlour with all the others (Budgies/fish etc)

...but then I'd also bring in a load of tbe people I look.after who I know to be lonely as well.

Yeah a pet for an elderly person living alone is a great companion especially during the lockdowns we had.
The cost can be prohibitive and they even have pet food banks now.

On the subject of lockdowns so many people got dogs during this period which was fine when they were working from home but now the pets are neglected and in some cases unwanted with the cost of living crisis not helping either.

Gary sorry about your cat that is terrible. The voluntary work.you are doing is really great. I look after a lot of elderly people with pets who'd really struggle to afford vets fees but to.an elderly person especially one who might be otherwise lonely that pet is an actual lifeline. In many cases it gives the person a reason to keep going. I have seen that play out so many times.

Don't mean to sound patronising but we'll done to you.

One thing to be wary of when getting any pet now is the cost of vets fees even with insurance policies which in reality do not cover a lot of charges (X rays Jabs etc)

Our last Ginger Tom had treatment to the tune of over £6000 with
two operations / amputated toe and various other X rays scans & add ons before we were finally told the cause of his pain was a secondary tumour which had spread to his tissue so we had to do the right thing and have him put to sleep.

If the vet had done the necessary scan in the first place it would of saved the poor animal the trauma of the ops, and us an awful lot of money.

I was pretty pissed of about it at the time and made my feelings known to the vet but they are only jn it for the money at the end of the day.
The insurance policy with pet plan only paid roughly two thirds of that figure.

It is also very hard to find an independent vet in London these days as they have been taken over by the big chains often using the original practice name the same as dentists, undertakers etc
I also started volunteering at an animal hospital afterwards and still do to this day as I feel it is a very worthy cause for those without the funds to access a vet.

If you are set on of those two go for a Main Coon.
They are very chilled cats but are huge (fair bit of grooming required too). Bengals are closer to their wild cousins and it shows.
My last 4 cats have all been rescue. Got my current cat when she was six. It took a while for us to get on (she had done the Cats Protection League humanisantion course as she was, more or less, feral when they got her) but we get along perfectly now.

Can't do a dog at the moment, sadly, as it would not be fair on a dog, as we go away a fair bit and work gets in the way too. Its more a pet for the kids.

Get one of each, if you're going to be a massive old woman you might as well go all in.

If you get tired if finding their hairs in your food because they walk all over the kitchen surfaces, then see you doctor about some TRT and fill a bucket with some water for the cats.

This is very disappointing stuff Rios.

Rio ran my own 2 cat sitting businesses for 20yrs so had lots of dealings with both breeds.
Maine coons are by far the friendlier and easier to look after. Bengals need constant attention and have tons of energy so love playing.
If you xan always go for rescue cats rather then a breeder.

You cant really fart in a general direction. smells tend to disperse omnidirectionally even if you direct your cheeks in someones direction. Particularly if you have some Marks and Sparks stone washed jeans on.
